Registered plan trustee
Who holds it inside my RRSP or TFSA?
Olympia Trust is the trustee of the registered plans that hold Tawakkul units.
An RRSP, TFSA, FHSA or RESP is not a thing you own directly — it is a trust arrangement, and somebody must be the trustee of it. For Tawakkul units held inside a registered plan, that trustee is Olympia Trust Company, a Canadian trust company that specialises in self-directed registered plans holding exempt-market securities.
This is why a registered subscription takes longer than a cash one. Your existing institution has to transfer the funds, Olympia has to accept the units into the plan, and both sides have their own paperwork. Several weeks is normal, and most registered transfers that fail, fail from silence rather than refusal.
It also answers a question people ask nervously: the units really are inside the plan. The tax shelter is not a promise made by the fund. It is a registered plan administered by a licensed trustee, reported to the Canada Revenue Agency in the ordinary way.
